Staring at the Sky

Staring at the Sky - Sunset Sky

i have this funny thing that keeps happening as I get older.

I keep thinking I’m going to understand more.

And in some ways, I do. I understand how to make a song a little better. I understand how to get through a hard week. I understand that most things are not as dramatic as they feel in the moment, and that coffee helps almost everything.

But the big stuff?

I’m not sure I understand any of it more than I did when I was younger.

In fact, I might understand it less.

That’s really where “Staring at the Sky” came from. It’s a song about looking up and realizing that the world is still completely surprising. Life is still strange. People are still mysterious. Time is still impossible to explain. And somehow, despite all of that, or maybe because of it, there is still so much beauty in just being here.

I don’t think this song is trying to solve anything.

It’s not a grand statement. It’s not a philosophy lecture with a chorus. It’s more like a late-night thought that accidentally turned into a song.

What is life anyway?
What’s the point?
Are we supposed to figure it out?
Or are we supposed to enjoy the time we have while we’re here?

I don’t know.

And weirdly, that doesn’t feel as scary to me as it used to.

There’s a line in the song about being in a constant state of wonder, and I think that’s the heart of it. That feeling of not knowing, but still caring. Still dreaming. Still asking questions. Still looking into someone’s eyes and thinking, okay, maybe this is enough for right now.

Maybe we don’t need to make sense of all of it.

Maybe we just need to notice it.

The sky. The stars. The people we love. The ridiculous odds of being alive at the same time as the people who make us feel understood. The small moments that somehow carry more meaning than the big explanations ever could.

I made this song because I needed somewhere to put those thoughts.

And like a lot of Sunset Sky songs, it lives somewhere between hope and confusion. Which, honestly, might be where I live most of the time too.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for being here.
